VE/RBSVP Service Award

Understanding the Auxiliary Vessel Examination and RBS Visitation Program Service Performance Award ribbon

VE/RBSVP Service Award ribbon

The VE/RBSVP Service Award, more fully known as the Auxiliary Vessel Examination and RBS Visitation Program Service Performance Award, can be confusing to both awardees and other Auxiliarists. The ribbon design (shown above) can be earned several ways, but worn only once.

From 1988 to 1995, the ribbon design shown above was used as the AMOS Vessel Examinations Award, and those recipients can still wear it.

In 1995, a new system of Auxiliary ribbons was introduced, and the AMOS Vessel Examinations Award ribbon design was recycled and used for a new VE/RBSVP Service Award.

In this current triple role, the ribbon can be earned for 60 or more recreational vessel examinations, 20 or more examinations of certain commercial vessels, 60 or more RBSVPs, or any combination totalling 60 or more of all three award criteria.

In any case, the ribbon can be worn only once. Subsequent awards are denoted by bronze or silver 316" service stars. Since 2017 the previously authorized AMOS “V” device is no longer authorized and must be removed from the ribbon; its use to denote vessel examinations conflicted with the “V” device used to denote valor by the Coast Guard and other armed services.

For exact details of VE/RBSVP Service Award ribbon criteria and manner of wear, consult COMDINST M16790 (series) Auxman Chapter 11, sections A.11.b (Award Elements) and A.11.d (VE/RBSVP Service). Auxiliarists should direct questions regarding this award through their chain of leadership.
